The lava scorpion is one of the deadliest combatants in the Lava Kingdom. Its armoured hide protects it against attacks, its pincers and stinger burn on contact, and its dark colouration enables it to lie in wait among the rocks and crags, ready to strike the moment an unsuspecting enemy draws close enough.

The Schleich lava scorpion is one of the oldest and most popular toys in the Eldrador series. And one of the largest, measuring in at 20 cm long from the tips of its front pincer claws to the hindmost pair of feet. And when the tail is angled directly over the body, it can be 16 cm tall.

Unlike most other lava monsters, this scorpion’s main colour is black, with fiery orange accents, yellow eyes, and a bit of dark yellow airbrushing on the chelicerae and the top of the tail. The pincers and the stinger are made of translucent orange and painted over with black. It looks very creepy and sinister, and not at all out of place on Halloween night.

While unmistakable as a scorpion, this arachnid has been sculpted to look as though its body is made out of hardened magma. This is especially the case with the aforementioned pincers and stinger, as they appear to still be burning. The claws have jagged edges and the stinger is bumpy, uneven, and massive quite unlike a real scorpion’s. It’s also covered in spikes, allowing it to double as a club.

The lava scorpion rests on its first two pairs of legs and belly. The other two pairs are suspended off the ground, but I haven’t heard either of my sons complain once about it. The pincers are ball-jointed at the wrists and the tail is ball-jointed at the base of the tail and the stinger. This allows for a great deal of imaginative play, especially since the tail is long enough so that the stinger can reach all the way down to the ground directly in front of the head, or on either side of the body.

The Schleich lava scorpion is a winner all around. If you have a limited budget for your children’s Eldrador collection or your own, then be sure to include this toy in it. You won’t regret it!
