Medusa is a monster from Greek Mythology, one of the three Gorgons – though she got the short end of the stick being the only mortal one of the sisters. Famous for having snakes for hair, to merely behold her would turn anyone instantly to stone.
Most of the time when I think of a werewolf these days, I think of a human that shapeshifted into a bipedal wolf-like creature, that retains some human characteristics. A wolf-like head, a human-like torso and arms, clawed hands, digitigrade paws, maybe a tail, that sort of thing.
With Halloween just over a week away I wanted to make sure I got at least one more review posted during this month where we celebrate all things monster. And what is more appropriate for Allhallows Eve than the human skeleton? A fixture of any respectable display of Halloween decorations.
We’re now deep into October and the spooky vibes are coming in strong. As I write there’s a nor’easter pummeling the coast; the sky is gray, the wind is howling, the leaves are flying off the trees. It’s time to amp up the fear level on the Monster Toy Blog and take a look at one of horror cinema’s most iconic villains.

And so reads the tagline for Universal’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. Released in 1954, Creature from the Black Lagoon was, like all the Universal monster movies, a special effects triumph.
There is no first mate aboard a pirate ship. Instead, the role of second in command falls to the quartermaster. The ghilan are shape-shifting ghouls from middle-eastern mythology. The word ‘ghilan’ is the plural form of the singular Arabic word, ‘ghul’, so technically this singular toy should be galled a ‘ghul’.
However, this series 4 ghilan or ghul (monster number 101) is very different from the series 1 ghoul (monster number 37).
If you had to ask me what my favorite things are, I’d probably tell you dinosaurs, and other prehistoric animals first. Yet almost equally, I also adore werewolves, wolf men, and any flavor of lycanthrope. There’s many different cultural tales of men that could shapeshift into wolves or wolf like creatures (if not other animals), rather willingly or forced from a curse, spell, disease, etc.

The yeti (Abomanixhomo messneri) is a very large and elusive ape that dwells in the Himalayan mountain range.
